Schneier on Security

I recently finished reading the book Schneier on Security by Bruce Schneier.

Pros:

  • His views on national, airline, and election security are sane and rational.
  • He’s concerned about liberty, privacy, and avoiding a police state.
  • It gets you thinking in a security mindset.
  • The references are voluminous.
  • It’s not overly technical, so you can loan it to your friends.

Cons:

  • He favors fixing several issues with more legislation, which bothers my Libertarian sensibilities. (He does consider the economic aspects, though; I’d lose in a debate.)
  • He advises deleting cmd.exe. (I guess you could just use PowerShell…)
  • Portions are repetitive. It’s a collection of articles, after all.
  • It’s not overly technical. (For that, listen to Steve Gibson’s excellent podcast Security Now!)

Recommended.
